Quick answer: 5 things to do first

  • Check your passport. It should be valid for at least six months after you return.
  • Choose your package and confirm your hotels, flights and transfers.
  • Sort your visa and Nusuk permit. The visa lets you enter Saudi Arabia. The permit is for performing Umrah.
  • Book your vaccination early. Check the current Saudi health rules, including the meningitis ACWY vaccine.
  • Learn the Umrah steps and duas before you fly, so you feel ready.

Your first Umrah is a special trip. It is also normal to feel nervous. You may ask: What do I wear? What do I pack? How crowded will it be? What if I make a mistake? The answers are simpler than you think. Take one step at a time, and ask for help when you need it.

What is Umrah, and how long does it take?

Umrah is a pilgrimage to Makkah that you can perform at almost any time of year. It is not the same as Hajj, which happens on fixed dates in Dhul Hijjah. The Umrah rites themselves can take several hours, depending on the crowds. Most UK packages are 7, 12 or 14 nights, so you also have time to pray in Madinah.

A typical Umrah trip from the UK includes your flights, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, transfers, and visa help. For a full list, read our guide to what is included in an all-inclusive Umrah package.

How to book Umrah from the UK

Booking your first Umrah is easy when you take it step by step. First, choose a package that fits your dates, budget and group size, and compare the hotels and what is included. Next, check your visa route, which depends on your passport, and make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after you return. Then book your flights and hotels together in one package, so your dates and transfers match, and browse our Umrah packages to compare your options.

How to prepare before you travel

Start early. Many first-timers wait too long and then rush. This simple timeline helps.

Visa, Nusuk permit and health rules

Your visa

The right visa route depends on your passport. British passport holders may have an eVisa option, while other passport holders may need a different route through an authorised agent. Our Saudi visa and transport service page explains how Tawaf Global can help.

Your Nusuk permit

A visa lets you enter Saudi Arabia. To perform Umrah, you also need a permit booked through the official Nusuk platform. The same platform is used for Rawdah visits in Madinah. Our Nusuk app guide shows you how it works.

Vaccinations and health

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health publishes its pilgrim health rules every year. In recent seasons, the meningitis ACWY vaccine has been required for Umrah arrivals, and it was needed some days before arrival. The UK Health Security Agency also recommends it. Book your appointment early, and check the current rules on TravelHealthPro before you travel. If you take regular medicines, speak to your GP or pharmacist.

Beware of fraudHajj and Umrah fraud is a known problem for UK Muslims. Book with a trusted, protected agency. For flight packages sold in the UK, ask about ATOL protection and keep your documents.

Documents checklist

Keep these in your hand luggage, not in your checked bag. Also keep photos of each one on your phone.

What to pack for Umrah

Pack light. You will walk a lot, and you will likely buy a few things on the way home. Tick items off as you pack.

What to expect on your Umrah journey

Arrival and transfers

You will land in Jeddah or Madinah, go through immigration, collect your bags and meet your transfer. This can take a few hours, so be patient. Packages often include airport transfers and transport between Makkah and Madinah. Read more about the transfer and Haramain train options.

Your hotel

Check-in times can be later than you hope. Keep your hotel name and address saved on your phone and on paper. Your hotel and its distance to the Haram will affect how much you walk. Our 3-star, 4-star and 5-star packages list named hotels so you can compare.

A hotel closer to the Haram means less walking, which helps first-timers and elderly pilgrims.

Crowds, heat and walking

The Haram can be very busy, especially around prayer times and in school holidays or Ramadan. Weather can be hot, so drink water often and rest when you need to. Wear comfortable shoes and go at your own pace. If you or a family member find walking hard, ask your agency about wheelchair options before you travel.

Madinah

Most packages include time in Madinah. You can pray at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi and visit the Rawdah, if you have booked a permit. Many pilgrims find Madinah calmer than Makkah.

The steps of Umrah, simply explained

These are the main steps. Rules can differ slightly between schools of thought, so follow your scholar or guide. Your agency can also teach you before you travel.

  1. Enter Ihram and make your intention (niyyah)You enter Ihram at or before the Miqat. Your agency will tell you when to put on your Ihram, often before or during the flight. Once in Ihram, you follow its rules and say the Talbiyah.
  2. Enter Masjid al-HaramEnter with respect and a calm mind. Keep your hotel card with you.
  3. Perform TawafWalk around the Kaaba seven times, starting from the Black Stone line and keeping the Kaaba on your left.
  4. Pray two rakats and drink ZamzamPray two rakats after Tawaf, ideally near the Station of Ibrahim if you can. If it is too crowded, pray anywhere in the Haram.
  5. Perform Sa’iWalk seven laps between the hills of Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa and finishing at Marwah.
  6. Shave or trim your hairMen shave their head or trim their hair. Women trim a small amount from the ends. This completes your Umrah.

Tips for first-timers, and mistakes to avoid

Helpful tips

  • Learn the steps and duas before you go, and keep a small dua booklet with you.
  • Stay with your group or family, and agree a meeting point inside the Haram.
  • Rest between rites. Do not try to do everything in one day after a long flight.
  • Keep your phone charged, and save your agency’s emergency number.
  • Be patient and kind in crowds. It is part of the experience.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the visa, permit or vaccination to the last minute.
  • Packing too much, then struggling with heavy bags.
  • Wearing new shoes on the trip, and getting blisters.
  • Using scented products in Ihram.
  • Booking only on price, without checking hotels, Haram distance and what is included.
  • Not knowing who to call if something goes wrong in Saudi Arabia.

Travelling with family or elderly parents

Umrah is possible for families and elderly pilgrims with good planning. Think about hotels close to the Haram, private transfers, fewer hotel moves and flights at easy times. A non-shifting package means you stay in one hotel and do not have to move your bags. Tawaf Global offers family, group and customised Umrah options, so you can build a plan around your needs.
